tier1, a trailblazer in sustainable IT solutions, proudly announces receipt of the distinguished King’s Award for Enterprise: Promoting Opportunity 2024. This esteemed recognition celebrates tier1’s innovative prison recycling program, a collaborative effort with ANTZ UK, which has not only significantly contributed to environmental sustainability but has also facilitated the successful reintegration of prisoners into society.
tier1’s prison recycling initiative stands as a testament to its commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship. Participants in the program dedicate 30-40 hours per week to e-waste management processes, gaining invaluable practical experience and developing transferable skills such as teamwork, work ethic, and adherence to quality standards. ANTZ UK’s ‘Through the Gate’ employability program further prepares prisoners for reintegration, ensuring they secure sustainable job opportunities upon release.
This program has wide-ranging positive impacts on both the community and the environment. By providing equal opportunities for employment, tier1 and ANTZ UK reduce unemployment rates and promote community integration, ultimately decreasing recidivism and improving overall societal well-being. Moreover, tier1’s commitment to recycling e-waste plays a crucial role in combating climate change by reducing hazardous toxins and emissions associated with new device manufacturing and transportation.
Since its inception in 2013, tier1 and ANTZ UK’s prison initiative has achieved remarkable success, boasting a reoffending rate of only 6.2%, compared to the UK’s national average of 23.1%. Over half of the program participants secure employment upon release, surpassing the national average by a significant margin. The program has benefited 145 individuals, providing over 30,000 hours of training and generating approximately £4.3 million in societal savings.
In its latest endeavour, tier1 and ANTZ UK have launched an Ofqual-regulated, ETCAL Level-2 accredited award, further empowering program participants with professional skills and IT recycling qualifications. With a commitment to inclusivity and environmental sustainability, tier1’s self-funding workshop at HMP Hindley continues to pave the way for societal change and community integration.
The King’s Awards for Enterprise, previously known as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, were renamed last year to reflect His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s by recognising outstanding UK businesses. The Award programme, now in its 58th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to use the esteemed King’s Awards Emblem for the next five years.
Commenting on the receipt of the King’s Award for Enterprise, Jonathan Rose, Founder of tier1, expressed gratitude and emphasised the collaborative effort behind the initiative. “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award, which acknowledges the transformative impact of our partnership with ANTZ UK in promoting opportunity and sustainability. This accomplishment stands as a tribute to the unwavering commitment and relentless efforts of all those engaged in this remarkable endeavour. Building on the foundation laid by our Queen’s Award in 2019, this recent accolade underscores the substantial growth of this program and hints at even greater achievements on the horizon.”
Jen Pemberton, CEO & Founder of ANTZ UK, said “ANTZ UK is proud to have partnered with Tier 1 for over 10 years, turning a vision into reality. Tier 1 is a leader in delivering person-centred social impact. Co-production and collaboration are key to sustaining this impact. A huge congratulations to the whole Tier 1 team for their vision, dedication, support, and delivery.”
Looking ahead, tier1 and ANTZ UK are poised to expand their efforts, with a focus on partnering with young offenders’ institutions to intervene early and break the cycle of destructive behaviours. Through understanding, support, and collaboration, tier1 and ANTZ UK aim to build a brighter future for individuals, communities, and the planet.
